My First ₹200: Turning an E-Waste Monitor Into an Earning Opportunity
A working Dell monitor in my father's e-waste unit, a buyer with a fixed budget, and my first independently closed sale.
Sometimes, your first earning opportunity doesn't require starting a business from scratch. It can come from noticing the value in something that's already around you.
For my EYFI (Earn Your First Income) Challenge at Polygnan, that opportunity came from an unexpected place: my father's e-waste recycling unit.
An Unexpected Opportunity
My father runs an e-waste recycling unit, and a batch of semi-scrap items had arrived recently. Among them was a 24-inch Dell monitor.
The monitor was in working condition, with a good display. It only needed some basic checking and cleaning. Its internal cost was ₹2,000, and my father had planned to sell it for ₹5,000.

Around the same time, a person named Akash walked into the unit looking for a monitor. His budget was ₹2,000, but the smaller, colourful monitor he originally wanted wasn't available.
That's when I saw an opportunity to make a sale of my own.
Making the Sale
I showed Akash the Dell monitor and explained its condition. I demonstrated that the display was working properly and showed him how it worked with an HDMI connection.

He was satisfied with the display quality and the overall condition. However, his budget was fixed at ₹2,000.
After considering the situation, I decided to sell him the monitor for ₹2,200.
The deal went through, and I received the payment through UPI.
My first personal earning, the profit, from the sale was ₹200.
It wasn't a complicated business transaction, but it was my first experience independently identifying an opportunity, speaking to a potential buyer, and closing a sale as part of the EYFI Challenge.
What I Learned From Selling a Used Monitor
This experience taught me that earning money doesn't always begin with a new product or an original business idea. Sometimes, it begins with understanding what is already available and finding someone who sees value in it.
I also learned the importance of being clear and honest when selling used products. Demonstrating that the monitor worked, explaining its condition, and allowing the buyer to assess its quality helped build confidence in the purchase.
The experience also showed me that a successful sale involves understanding the customer's needs and budget. Akash had a specific amount he was willing to spend, and I had to find a way to make the transaction work within that constraint.
My First ₹200 Was More Than Just Money
Looking back, this challenge was a reminder that opportunities can show up in everyday situations. You don't always need to build something from scratch or invest a large amount to make your first earning.
Sometimes, you need to recognise an opportunity, understand what a customer needs, and have the confidence to make an offer.
Selling that monitor earned me ₹200 and helped me experience the process of making a sale firsthand.
It was a small beginning, but it gave me something valuable: the confidence that I could identify an opportunity and turn it into income.
And that's what made this first earning meaningful.
